"This one's pretty special. Timothy's a terrific artist and he used to join me onstage at The Antihoot and rap over this song which originally appeared on my album Kids Fly Free. It was always a lot of fun to do and we recorded the original tracks of just me, Tim, and acoustic guitar many years ago in NYC. Recently, Tim dug it up and sent it to me, and I spent a few days adding strings, chorus and some studio pixie dust to it. I think the lyrics are just as, if not more relevant today, unfortunately. I Love America (But She Don’t Love Me)
Maybe if I was a cop
Maybe if I learned to play golf
Maybe if I wasn’t young, broke and gay
Maybe then she would talk to me and love me
I love America but she don’t love me
She made me leave my home
She got me working for my night and moan
Got my skin peeling off of my bones
Got the sun beating down on my dome
Screaming, "love me or leave me alone."
Now I’m travelling but which way do i go?
That was many, many moons ago
Oh baby, i love you so
Because you leave me out in the cold
And you never tell me what's going on
Maybe if I was a perfect girl
Maybe if this was perfect world
Maybe if I wasn’t old, sick and black
Maybe then she would take me back and love me
I love America but she don’t love me
You lie to me all of the time
Don't wanna see it 'cos love is blind
Give me drugs to destroy my mind
I don't care 'cos you're so fine
I'm enticed by your spacious skies
Leaving you would be a waste of time
Where else can you speak your mind?
Where else do they feed your mind?
Where else do they eat your mind?
Who else can you be but mine?
My beautiful, America?
It wasn’t long ago we walked on the moon
She was so beautiful singing heaven’s tune
She said one day we’d all live in harmony
Oh, how could she just turn her back on me
Remember when you let me in?
Now my blood's all over your skin
Oh no, I’m whipped again
Like back when you whipped my kin
Making love to an African
Now I’m an American
Slash lower-class citizen
Make me wanna bleach my skin
Make a rapper wanna dis women
If I do will you love me again,
My beautiful America?
Maybe if I showed her how it could be
By marching faithfully in her army
Killing each and every one of her enemies
But how could beauty have so many enemies?
Whatever happened to my miss liberty?
Oh, how could she just turn her back on me
I love America
I love America
But she don’t love me
we love America
Timothy dark loves America
I know Lach loves America
My man, George, loves America
Red, white and blue
She don’t love you
Yeah we love her, love her
We love her, love her
We love her, love her
We love her, love her
We love her, love her
But I do
We love her, love her
Oh baby, I do
We love her, love her
I love America
We love her, love her
Yeah we love her, love her
I love America, child don't you
Yeah we love her, love her
Stop the war
Yeah we love her, love her
I love America

I have a kid who was a baby when the pandemic started and a toddler now. When he’s older and asks what the pandemic is like I’m gonna put this album on and pour myself a drink- this covers it all. Feels surreal to imagine ever having the privilege of going to see a Jeffrey Lewis show again but it’s top of my list when this crap is over. savanns
