My Weird Nightstand

My Weird Nightstand Her Valentine's rose is comfortably snug Its stem poked into a bottle of wine Eight nights ago after copious drugs She confessed that her love is mine The bag of shrooms hangs from the dangling leg Of a GI Joe in drag disguise A paper pyramid of green and red Sends a beam of light into our eyes Business cards and photographs Condoms and cassettes Guitar picks and autographs My life's a beautiful mess A teapot of pennies and next month’s rent A box of Sea Monkeys and a Buddha bong The Batman notebook that I wrote this on My weird nightstand holds the words of this song Business cards and photographs Loose change and cigarettes Guitar picks and autographs My life's a beautiful mess Business cards and photographs Phone numbers and soft regrets Guitar picks and autographs My life's a beautiful mess

about

I really should count how many singles I've put out exclusively to my Bandcamp Fan Club, maybe do a 50th single celebration or some such thing, but I've never been all that compatible with doing things I should be doing.

Now, that's neither here nor there having anything to do with this tune, My Weird Nightstand, but with titles like that, a digression or seven wouldn't be all that out of order, now would it?

As for this song, it was partially inspired by a song I loved as a kid called 'King of The Road'. If you all remember, that tune was from the point of view of an anti-hero itinerant traveller. A guy smoking cheap cigars and staying in run down hotels. It seemed so daring and romantic to me as we sang it in our junior high school music class.
Now an inspiration doesn't always produce anything one would've cited the other way around. I don't think anyone hearing this song or reading the lyrics without the afore mentioned context would think of 'King of The Road' but I've always liked hearing the stories behind the songs, thought you might too.

It was also inspired by looking over at my strange bedside nightstand after a one night stand had breezed out my door, and noticing its population. - Lach
