about

SONG NOTES: I went to visit Brenda Kahn at her loft on the Bowery. She took out a trumpet, and played a few notes. As she did, the sun came into view sending beams of light throughout the room. I stared at her aura as it turned into a kaleidoscope of color and I was filled with a sense of wonder at this musical friend of mine. She finished playing. I mumbled something like "Cool," went home and jotted down the first stanza of the song. A year later I saw American Music Club and was impressed by Mark Eitzel's writing. I wanted to write a "Mark Eitzel" song and came up with the music and lyrics to a stanza, bridge and chorus. The lyric of the bridge, "Little birds reflected in a pool of Olympic ice," refers to the erotica of Anais Nin. However, I couldn't get the first stanza until I found the lines I had written about my afternoon with Brenda. 1 realized they'd make a perfect start to the song. Ta-da!

STUDIO NOTES: Recorded live in the studio with Billy, Geoff and me in a circle surrounded by microphones. Billy dug up some bongos and away we went. The Humans added the Rubber Soul "Sha-la-las."

lyrics

The Jester

she played the trumpet
and the walls turned into fish
flopping on the carpet
man, she didn't even flinch
i guess she didn't notice
as the sky poured through the room
and filled my soul with a tenderness
like a louis armstrong tune

and i always love the girl
who lives in a private world
i become a jester
just to get her
to smile at me

caught in the current of her alchemistry
my blood turns into gold and mercury
like young elvis' blue falsetto moon
i understood alone
when she walked through the room

our eyes performed a ballet
like the hands of dorothy hamill
little birds reflected
in a pond of olympic ice
