about

SONG NOTES: I started reading the comic book Sandman. I loved this book and kept try¬ing to get Geoff to read it. "It's exactly the kind of book you and I would write. It's like this guy knows us. It's great!" I told him. A week later Geoff called me and said he had been reading Sandman and did I know it was written by Neil. "Yeah, of course, Neil Gaiman, the cur¬rent god of comic books!" I said.
"Yeah, also known as Neil Gaiman my oldest friend from London, the guy I got kicked out of school with, the singer from my first punk band, Chaos. When you said it was like this guy know us…he does!”
Hmmmm, just another in a very, very long series of coincidences between Geoff and me.
Dreamboat is my tribute to The Sandman and his creator Neil Gaiman.
STUDIO NOTES: I was attending a play about the Golem. Every time the creature appeared this remarkable sound similar to a Theremin was heard. After the show I went up to the musicians and asked what produced the tones. They showed me a bizarre metal container encircled by metal rods. They said it was called a waterphone and that they were pretty rare. The next day I was talking with my producer Richard and told him I heard the perfect instrument for "Dreamboat" and described it to him.
"Oh, you mean a waterphone. I've got one of them. They are made in Hawaii by a guy I know named Richard Waters. I'll bring it in." He said.
It is now a fact, Richard knows everybody in the world. We had three versions of the song and on the best one Billy had broken his drum brush halfway through but kept on playing. If you listen closely at the end you can hear Billy saying, "Fuck, the brush broke!"
And my reply of "Cool."

lyrics

Dreamboat

There are men walking the earth There are men walking the Earth
who can point to the moon and say,
"I've been there."
And there are priests preaching the bible
Who can describe hell and say,
"You'll go there."

Hey, hey, hey, wake me up I'm screaming
Oh yeah, kick me right out of bed
Jesus locked me out of heaven Jesus, lock me out of Heaven
The good always punish the bad

There are women with my number
written in their book of the dead
And there are ladies with my letters
hidden beneath the thoughts in their head

Me, I try so hard to win and
I keep getting lost instead
Me, I'm the kid with the graveyard grin
To me everybody stands naked
