Marginal Man
You always did the right thing
So why is everything so wrong?
Hung your hat on the right hook
But took the wrong one home
You always did your homework
You kept your grades up high
You were valedictorian and you
Made your parents cry
And the girl that you married looks fine at office parties
And the kids you had were all born looking thirty
And the life you had planned is just what you have
Still you feel unnecessary like a marginal man
One day on a sales trip you realize where you are
In front of the old house get out of the car
At the door they talk politely and ask you to come in
Though the wife she mumbles something like, “You can’t go home again”
And their kid sits studying a computer screen
He starts to tell you what all the buttons mean
And you want to grab him and throw him into the street
And tell him to start running before it’s too late
