I Am The Night

Hear my words floating toward you In your room all alone The sun's been down for hours and life tonight's as still as the telephone Whispered wishes from yesterday gather strength as years go by Return to take you away Ride swiftly, ride with the night I am the night that you've been dreaming of The night waiting right here for your love In your dreams of delight In your hopes, your hopes for love Comes riding the night Coming down to you from far above I am the night that you've been waiting for The night shining right outside your door Whispered wishes from yesterday gather strength as years go by Return to take you away Ride swiftly, ride with the night I am the night that you've been dreaming of The night waiting right here for your love I am the night that you've been waiting for The night shining right outside your door I am the night that you've been dreaming of The night waiting right here for your love

about

"This is among the first songs I ever wrote. I was a teenager and playing classical piano at the time in the suburbs of NYC. On the way to and from piano lessons I'd listen to WABC 77 Music Radio and I focused on the songs by piano players like Elton John, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Barry Manilow, Billy Joel and even REO Speedwagon. I wrote "I Am The Night" to prove to myself I could write songs like them, though I didn't want to. Punk hadn't hit yet, I hadn't started the Antifolk thing up yet, but I knew there was a different way to write than what I was hearing on the radio. I wrote this song to show that I could write that way, but I was choosing not to.

Then last week I was thinking of the song and that it might be fun to see what kind of production I could achieve on it during this pandemic lockdown. Coincidentally, I was typing some pages from an old journal into my computer (digitalising my life) and the page I was entering was from the day I wrote the song!

It's hard to argue with destiny, so here it is, I Am The Night!" - Lach
