Happy Birthday Dear Me

Happy Birthday Dear Me
The sun rises grey on a cold November day
And the heater in the hotel has died
Last night's gig was survived by playing with closed eyes
And all the FaceBook wishes make me feel so far away
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to me
Happy birthday
Happy birthday dear me
Alone on my birthday in a town that's not my own
I head out collar up ‘cross cold cobblestone
Perhaps a movie but the theatres they all show the same damn thing
Men with guns missing women killing men
There's something about touring as you turn another year
Another stage in a life spent strumming strings
It's the feeling that your work has always been about selling beer
When you thought it was about more sacred things
I miss my home, my garden, my family and my dog
And I can't believe this road I'm on
Last night outside of Leeds driving scared into the fog
I sang that damn fool song just to try to keep calm
And my voice was shaky as i peered into the mist
Singing the saddest tune surely ever penned
A melody sang to me by strangers and by friends
That always reminds me of everyone I miss
