about

ABC No Rio was directly across the street from my illegal after hours joint where Antifolk was born, The Fort. The Fort's infamous open stage, The Antihoot, was on Monday nights and became NYC's longest running and most successful open stage of all time. ABC No Rio's open stage was beautifully run by Matthew Courtney and between it, The Fort and No Se No a bit further up Rivington Street and anarchic and joyous community went wild in the 1980's and was dubbed by some as 'The Rivington School'. You had to be there.
This cut, Holy Days, ended up on as the opening cut on my third album Kids Fly Free and here it is, years earlier, stripped down, live, raw and Antifolk stylee.

lyrics

Holy Days

People sit terrified in the back of gypsy cabs
Angel-babies take a ride they know that it can't last
We all know something we shouldn't know
I know, oh Lord, I know

Glowing faces come and hear my testimony
I'll quote you tales of fire and myths of infamy
Come on, sweet sugar, take a hold of me
There is nothing any greater than this mystery
Oh, these are holy days

Put your heart into mine, honey, hear what I say
Life is too short for tomorrow we can only live today
But we're all little children hiding out from daddy's gaze
Forgive me great father I only want to celebrate these holy days

These are my holy days
These are holy days
